Barnabas - 17 October, 2024

The chill of autumn has settled over Ravenwood Manor, bringing with it whispers of restless spirits. The veil between worlds grows thinner as the season wanes, and with it comes the return of those who once rode beneath moonlit skies.

I had scarcely retired to my study when a sudden chill licked at the edges of the room, snuffing the candle’s flame before I could shield it. The temperature plunged, and the scent of lavender, tinged with something acrid, like burnt gunpowder, unfurled through the air. A sign.

Steeling myself, I turned toward the window, where the mist had thickened unnaturally. Beyond the glass, shadowy movement stirred just at the edges of perception. And then, out of the shifting gloom, he appeared.

A figure stood at the manor gates, clad in finery decades out of place, a high-collared coat, its dark fabric embroidered with silver thread; knee-high riding boots muddied with spectral dust. He removed his tricorn hat with a flourish, tilting his head toward me as though he had been expected.

The Dandy Highwayman.

The wind rose in a sudden gust, rattling the iron bars, and when I stepped outside, the ghost had moved—standing now at the old cobbled road just beyond the estate. His form flickered between substance and shadow, the details of his embroidered waistcoat fading in and out of existence.

"Well met, Master Ravenwood," he drawled, his voice a smooth melody of mischief and sorrow. “A man of intellect such as yourself should know better than to turn away a fellow traveler of the night.”

His manner was theatrical, his movements exaggerated as he removed one glove and inspected the lace cuffs beneath. Despite his courtly air, there was something deeply unsettling about him.

"I seek not your coin nor your comfort,” he continued, “only to pass on a whisper from the winding roads. There are treasures locked away, and only those who heed the wisdom of the road may find them.”

I felt compelled to answer, though my throat had gone dry. “What treasure do you speak of?”

At this, he grinned, a glimmer of teeth in the pale moonlight. “That, dear sir, is for you to discover. Seek the hidden path where the moon meets the road, and there you shall find what you desire.”

The mist thickened, curling around him like living tendrils. In an instant, he was gone, leaving behind nothing but the scent of crushed lavender and a faint trail of disturbed earth where he had stood.

I spent the remainder of the evening poring over old texts, searching for mention of the spectral highwayman’s habits and cryptic riddles. One passage, in particular, caught my eye, an account of his final days before the ambush.

"At the place where night's glow touches the traveler’s way, he made his last stand."

"He swore to return and guard the roads where silver light meets the earth."

These words stir something in my mind. A key, perhaps, to something long buried.

If my suspicions are correct, the answer to his riddle lies within his tale, hidden between the lines, waiting to be unearthed. I must consider this carefully, for his words were not idly spoken. The dead seldom waste breath on trivialities.
