Subject: Entity Designation CAL
Classification: Communication-Bound Liminal Entity
Location: Red Telephone Box (unmapped), outskirts of village
I approached the phone box shortly after midnight.

The light within pulsed at irregular intervals, not random, but responsive. I tested this by stepping closer, then retreating. The light brightened as I withdrew, dimmed as I approached.

This suggests the entity prefers absence to presence.

Upon opening the door, I observed CAL directly. The form is compact, metallic-bronze in tone, with multiple coiled black wires encircling the torso. These are not electrical cables in the traditional sense, they behave more like symbolic conduits.

I did not hear the phone ring while inside.

This appears deliberate.

I suspect CAL functions as a buffer, absorbing excess communicative pressure from the boundary between living and dead. Where other entities transmit, CAL contains.

Notably, electronic devices malfunctioned within a three-metre radius. Digital timepieces skipped seconds. My recorder cut out repeatedly. The analogue wristwatch I carried slowed but did not stop.

Old systems respond better.

This may be key.

CAL does not appear hostile, nor benevolent in the traditional sense. It enforces delay. It ensures that not all calls are answered, and that those which are, arrive with intention.

Hypothesis:

CAL was once human, but willingly assumed this function. Unlike summoning ghosts, which cling, CAL restrains. Unlike messengers, CAL withholds.

This is not a haunting.

It is containment.

I will not attempt further provocation.

Some lines are safer left ringing.
