Brook

Brook's Bubbling Spirit

On a idyllic farmstead nestled amongst verdant Derbyshire hills, young Willa Harris blossomed along with her namesake brook bubbling merrily beyond the family’s gentle pastures. Her parents called the nature-loving girl “Brook” as she was often found wading barefoot near its banks, mesmerized by insects skating across glittering eddies and water lilies dancing on hidden currents as trout peeked from below.

By age twelve in 1967, Brook’s notebooks already overflowed with amateur sketches of vibrant wildflowers, pressed leaves, and adolescent odes celebrating the brook’s timeless flow. She dreamed the currents might someday carry her poetry and prose off to hidden worlds where Nature ruled supreme, far from humankind’s disruptions.

On long summer days Brook would escape chores to follow the brook’s wanderings far from the farm, seeking out plunging falls, mysterious caves and iridescent pools untouched since the dawn of time. In her mind she glimpsed nymphs, river deities and watery realms primeval man could scarcely fathom. Her connection to the brook felt somehow deeper than mere fascination.

Concerned by Brook’s flighty inattention to responsibilities, her parents finally forbade her solo brook adventures to keep her focused. “Plenty of time for nonsense later,” they dismissed. Heartbroken, Brook pined for her personal Eden now forbidden. Only late night escapades could sate her longing when sleep claimed her family. Beneath the stars she ached for the liberty again...

One muggy August evening Brook dozed off rereading cherished fables of ancient societies bound to nature’s rhythms and whims, not so different than her own Brook in truth. A vivid dream came wherein the brook’s very spirit manifested in the moonlight, beseeching Brook follow to a secret haven. Compelled, she floated silently into the silvery mist...

Dawn’s search party discovered Brook’s body fully clothed and soaked near a calm pool two miles downstream from her window. Stunned, all presumed a midnight sleepwalking tragedy. Yet Brook’s blissful expression stirred uneasy gossip of supernatural causes...

Police ultimately declared a wayward landfall in the night her undoing. With troubled hearts Brook’s family buried their daughter and marked her passing when summer’s glow faded. Some things remained unsaid. Over time Brook's strange spiritual devotion became mere footnote to a beautiful child taken too soon.

But decades on, renewed whispers spread of a ephemeral girl seen dancing barefoot near the pastoral brook...wreathed in water lilies, singing songs in long-lost tongues, or conjuring tiny water spouts with gleeful laughs that echo too long. A few late night fishermen even described a brook spirit guardian intervening to save them from slippery falls.

Most puzzling of all, youngsters who wander too far off the marked paths recount a comforting presence guides them safely home if they wait patiently by the gurgling flow. All the while spectral memories echo - of a remarkable soul whose light burned too bright amongst lowly mists. Though her life was unfairly fleeting, it seems Brook's spirit endures through the waters and wilds that called to her eternal spirit those fateful fifty years ago.
