Glacier

Glacier's Winter Fury

From her earliest frosted memories emerging in the icy depths of a still mountain pool, the newly-formed winter sprite who came to call herself Glacier felt instinctively bound to the silvery woodlands and snow-blanketed crags of Derbyshire’s Peak District. She quickly befriended fellow elemental sprites and guardian spirits devoted to preserving the wild sanctuary from intrusive human meddling. Glacier came to view it as a crystalline garden to nurture.

Flitting nimbly on winter winds high about the hidden glade crevices and thundering waterfalls locked in perpetual ice, Glacier marveled how even subtle shifts of light and temperature unleashed transformations only spirits attuned to nature’s innermost secrets could perceive – the poetry of seasons changing painted in every delicate fern frond and boulder-field rendered mutable under alabaster quartz and azure skies.

As industrial developments spread insidiously from nearby villages with their smokestacks and successor railroads carving cruel wounds across the once pristine haven, Glacier grieved as only one who sensed the land’s essence as her own could for its slow death. Dark satanic mills and voracious mining shattered the contemplative peace she had known since first coalescing beside an ice-crusted sapling so many revolutions ago...

In nightly convocation, fellow spirits – Ash and Stone, Thorn and Bracken – concluded that just as the humans forced unyielding iron rails and foreign fuel sources upon the ridges and dales, so too must equal magic be invoked if more than mere vestiges of old Derbyshire were to endure. And who better to conjure an icy scourge than their resident sprite of the gelid seasons herself?

Thus Glacier retreated into the shivering clouds and there focused her misty lungs towards summoning an epochal storm from lands far northern that these trampling interlopers would not soon forget. Innocent villagers were spared the initial brunt as creaking glaciers calved off distant Norwegian peaks, floating inexorably around Skagerrak's frozen fjords, gathering icebergs in their wake as they drifted on an unnatural current towards shores unprepared for such frigid payload’s landfall.

Within a week, translucent shards and jagged hills of ancient azure, viridian and aquamarine ice packed Derbyshire’s coves and bays in towering stacks gossiping locals swore must have cruised clear from the arctic itself. Buildings and machinery groaned under the relentless weight while roads and rail lines disappeared fully below the alien drifts swirling with spectral faces. The more intuitive of those snowed-in whispered Glacier’s wrath had finally manifested...but most remained oblivious.

As the merciless chill paralyzed all industry for weeks on end, nerves frayed and uncertainty reigned until inevitably that year's spring thaw at last restored mobility with flooded streets. But the spectacle left an indelible impression on authorities who henceforth regulated development near vulnerable forest regions to prevent such mysterious visitations recurring. They realized too late the necessity of respecting immutable forces beyond mankind’s ambition.

Glacier observed the slowing encroachments with bittersweet relief, nurturing saplings in the decades since though nature’s orchestral voice remains yet diminished from her youth. But when train whistles now echo oddly in the starlit valleys, some glimpse a pale maiden gliding alongside the tracks...ensuring her frigid reminder lingers for those who may again underestimate the sublime power of the wilds. For as long as the Peaks endure, so shall she.
