Storm

Chasing Tempests Untamed

Witnessing the raw magnificence of a building thunderstorm over Colorado’s eastern plains first stirred Alonso’s awe of meteorological power as a boy in 1872. While others saw ominous darkness in roiling battleship clouds backlit with constant flickers, young Alonso glimpsed nature’s dynamic beauty churning atmospherics into dazzling displays. He intimately studied every nuance and identified each species from anvil-topped cumulonimbus to wispy horse tails high aloft.

When an itinerant Montana hot air balloonist glided above their frontier town one autumn gathering storm data, Alonso’s destiny clicked into place. He spent his young adult years under the pilot’s tutelage, learning expert balloon handling while ascending skyward to analyze brewing storms with scientific tools for the first time. Now earthbound storms transformed into approachable titans he longed to dance among, if only to unravel their secrets.

By 1895 Alonso had established himself as a daring aeronautical storm investigator frequently glimpsed aloft over Colorado’s eastern plains and Nebraska panhandle monitoring supercell activity within the basket of his small hydrogen balloon christened “Stormrider.” Though deemed reckless by contemporary meteorologists, Alonso’s firsthand upper level accounts and pressure/electromagnetism recordings granted breakthrough understandings for the era’s weather science circles. They could not deny his contributions despite the practice’s peril.

Season after season for over two decades Alonso made hundreds of intrepid Stormrider ascents into the heart of mesocyclones, wall clouds and precipitation bands occupying storm systems other balloonists gave wide berth. He never lost religious reverence for the sophisticated machinations unfolding around his tiny craft, no matter their destructive results below. In Alonso’s learned view from the stratosphere, chaos assumed an artistic grace and satisfying order he struggled articulating to grounded audiences.

Fate caught up during a prolonged August supercell in 1915. Despite all precautions and intuition acquired from countless prior Sorties inside these titans’ realm, the winds shifted erratically amidst boiling tropopausal cumulonimbus unlike any previously documented by Alonso’s records. Stormrider was sucked within the swirling uproar before Alonso could escape his vessel’s envelope entangling in the worsening vortex.

The mangled wicker basket remnants washed ashore Lake McConaughy miles distant two weeks later with Alonso’s body strangely untouched save fatal contusions from the violent balloon debris impacts during vortex cycling. However his logbooks and newly innovated weather tools were never recovered from the savage maelstrom. Clearly Alonso timed his proverbial last dance with destiny poorly, paying the ultimate price for such daring proximity.

In ensuing generations, news accounts after early tornado formations and Midwest supercell sightings sometimes reference a phantom wicker basket emerging to dip and careen impossibly within the stewing clouds and wind shear on the storm’s outskirts...as if an intrepid specter still guided his eternally fated Stormrider into untamed fury from beyond. Though the vessel’s captain be gone, the craft’s endless mission remains where other earthly vessels dare not traverse. For chaos alone governs the realms of unbound spirits and winds.
