Talisman
Curiosity of Talisman
Edwin Reticul had always found solace among books and developed a deep thirst for knowledge. After training as a librarian, he readily accepted a position cataloging the vast occult collection at the remote Thornwood Estate.
While most avoided the underground archives housing these ancient and sinister works, Edwin found them thrilling. He marveled at the intricate illustrations of rituals, descriptions of alchemical transmutation, and disturbing accounts of communing with demons and spirits.
The estate's overseer had given strict orders the occult collection was prohibited from circulation or access without his permission. But Edwin could not resist secretly delving into the massive collection once left unattended. He returned to the surface giddy with the revelations and power promised by their contents.
Edwin knew such passionate pursuit of dark knowledge would not be tolerated if discovered. So he began skimming selections of particularly intriguing works, and even pocketing small sections of manuscripts to study after hours.
Using candles, chalk, salt and incense late at night, Edwin attempted to reenact rituals described in the texts. But results proved difficult - the books hinted much was predicated on deeper understanding and mastery than a dabbling novice could access. If only he could absorb their full wisdom directly.
This obsession consumed Edwin increasingly over the years as caretaker of the Thornwood collection. He now saw himself not as mere librarian, but guardian of a profound well of arcane secrets. Edwin took the occult name "Talisman" as his own.
The disastrous ritual
When the oversight of Thornwood's vaulted collections transferred to Edwin's bitter rival Armistead, his access was severely restricted. Out of spite, Armistead even ordered certain shelves of troubling texts boarded up.
This enraged the unfettered academic in Talisman. Determined to save the mysterious works from being sealed away, he used all his cunning to distract Armistead and slink into the archives at night.
Talisman's hands shook with excitement as he pried open the restricted vault and beheld rows of forbidden occult works. He scanned the shelves, pulling down various manuscripts and artifacts to smuggle out before they were lost forever.
But as Talisman pulled one large brittle text from a high shelf, he stumbled back and the heavy tome fell open. Glancing at the exposed pages, the hair on Talisman's neck stood up. He saw intricate instructions for a ritual imbuing the reader with complete metaphysical knowledge through the book itself.
Talisman knew this was the answer to his deepest longing - the ritual could fuse his mind permanently with the book's contents! He would finally become one with this wellspring of eldritch truths. All the preparation, this was his purpose...
Working feverishly through the night, Talisman assembled the required implements and bound the occult book securely to his head. As dawn broke, he began the incantations while walking the summoning circle and waiting for the book's knowledge to flood into his mind.
But something went horribly wrong. Talisman screamed as the book seemed to constrict around his skull like a fiery vice. Mad laughter and unintelligible whispers assaulted his mind.
Talisman clawed desperately at the chains and pages as raging pain consumed him. But it was too late - the ritual had trapped him in its grasp, and the archives filled with the smell of burning leather and flesh.
When Armistead arrived later, he recoiled in horror at the sight of his rival's body in the center of a scorched summoning circle, the chained book somehow fused to what remained of Talisman's head. It was clear no natural death had befallen him.
The haunted archives
In the decades since Talisman's gruesome demise, the Thornwood Estate has fallen into disrepair and been abandoned. But locals still report an eerie presence that roams the grounds and mysterious baritone chanting emanating from its locked subterranean vaults.
Those rare few who have managed to glimpse this apparition through the archives' dusty windows late at night describe a pale skeletal figure clad in robes, with a large leather book encasing its skull. Some say the text seems to writhe and bleed ink when the moon is full.
Perhaps a twisted fragment of poor Talisman's soul remains bound to this plane, fused with the profane knowledge he foolishly sought to absorb. For obsession comes at a cost, especially when one's reach exceeds their grasp.
Now the haunted archives sit unused while this tortured entity continues studying through eternity. Seeking meaning in what claimed his mortal life, and sharing his wisdom only with those restless souls who still seek to rend the veil asunder. Be careful what you read...
