Venom

Venom's Vile Vocation

In the remote forested hills beyond the village of Blackthorn, few dared tread near the ramshackle greenhouse known as Venom’s Nursery. Through cracked and grime-coated glass panes, one could glimpse dark vines and twisted trees bearing unusual blood-hued flowers and blackened fruits. The rare traveler passing by would shudder and whisper prayers of protection, quickly continuing down the overgrown trail.

For this was the domain of Venom – a chilling figure who had cultivated a notorious reputation amongst the superstitious villagers. They swapped hearsay about the tall gaunt man with deathly pallor who slipped into town under moonlight to peddle tonics and elixirs promising special properties for a price.

Some surmised Venom dealt in poison or other nefarious arts. But none could confirm details about the obscure gardener or the strange vegetation flourishing within that cursed nursery. A mangy black hound guarding its entrance deterred any foolish enough to approach. So the full truth about Venom – and why no birds sang nor insects buzzed around his greenhouse – remained oursider lore.

Venom’s origins trace back to a childhood fascination with the perilous side of nature. As a boy, he spent hours studying toxic mushrooms sprouting in the forest, memorizing the warning colors of venomous fauna. By adolescence, Venom was well-versed in every deadly nightshade subspecies and their effects when combined or concentrated.

His worried parents tried steering him toward more wholesome interests to no avail. They wisely locked away grandfather’s tinctures and botany books to curb Venom’s singular fascination. But their interventions only strengthened his morbid curiosity. What compelled their child toward the destructive rather than the creative? This obsession surely poisoned the mind as much as any belladonna berry.

When he reached adulthood, Venom abandoned city life for a secluded piece of land near the woods. There he could cultivate his own nursery full of plants both mesmerizing and deadly. No longer would others restrict his vision. Let local gossips spread rumors – their fear gave Venom space to build his private kingdom.

With supplies imported from abroad, Venom transformed the dilapidated greenhouse into environments specially tailored to growing toxic specimens. Night blooming Angel’s Trumpet and ghostly wolfsbane flourished under his hand. He tended each unique plant personally, nurturing their potency. Neighboring fauna knew better than to nibble these leaves.

Soon an apothecary’s array of vials, bowls and alembics cluttered the potting tables. Venom worked mystical methods to extract oils and essences from his nursed plants. These he blended into proprietary solutions with obscure effects desired by some daring buyers. His skill evading toxins himself allowed concocting ever more perilous elixirs.

Few had reason to associate openly with the strange gardener. But on occasion, desperate souls came knocking under moonless nights seeking Venom’s strongest mixtures for their unsavory aims. His reputation for discretion was assured. The village hermit, the scorned widow, the impatient heir – all left his greenhouse on shadowed paths clutching neat vials of doom.

Payment came in precious metals and artifacts Venom hid below the dirt floor inside his makeshift lab. Morals were of no concern – his craft was creation, not judgement. An ingredient’s lethality only made its inclusion more rewarding.

Those braving his domain glimpsed a ghastly figure tending the overgrown flora, his pallid skin and angular features blending with the ghostly blooms. Had the toxins altered Venom himself over the years? His presence provoked unease – a instinctive omen to avoid proximity with this man and his plants. The fog diffusing moonlight on such nights didn’t help abate the sinister atmosphere of the place.

Unfortunately, prolonged exposure even with precautions has consequences. Those choosing to dally with death must be prepared for a gradual decay of the body and spirit. On one fated night, Venom failed his own saving throw versus poison. An accidental brush of bare skin to a deadly nightshade thorn proved enough to seal his fate. They found him days later, collapsed beside a shattered vial of green serum he had been meticulously preparing. Even Venom could not elude morbidity forever.

In the decades since his death, the abandoned nursery has further overgrown into a choking bramble. Yet travelers attest to glimpsing faint candlelight within its bowels. And the rare toxin-related incident still raises suspicions that some malevolent force lingers amongst that hazardous flora.

On the darkest evenings, a figure hooded in black can supposedly be spotted slipping through the untamed gardens, delicately collecting seeds and cuttings. Some adolescent boys even dared each other towards the crumbling greenhouse doors once and heard rustling of leaves within. But peering inside, they found only shadows and a cold draft moaning through broken panes.

All plants with time return to the soil, even deadly nightshade. But knowledge of their power seems to linger if one listens to rumors about the greenhouse at the forest’s edge. For obsession and aptitude often outlast one’s earthly vessels. And a skilled hand can continue perfecting its art indefinitely when unbound by mortality. Perhaps, in some form, Venom’s vocation persists still, for creation transcends any single lifetime...
